Balakrishnan Nagarajan is originally from Tiruchirappalli, Tamilnadu, India. He attended R.S. Krishnan Higher Secondary School and later graduated with a B.Tech. (Hons.) in Mechanical Engineering from SASTRA University, Thanjavur, Tamilnadu, India. He gained fundamental industrial exposure in the fields of aerospace materials, NDT, and pressure vessel design. He had the opportunity to pursue his Master’s degree in Aerospace engineering from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) – Singapore and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany. He graduated with a Master’s degree specializing in composite materials, lightweight structures, and fracture mechanics. He started working as a Research Assistant and gained significant expertise in automated fiber placement, composite process technology, material and process behaviour characterization at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Institute for composite structures and adaptive systems, the Center for Lightweight Production Technology, in CFK Valley Stade, Niedersachsen, Germany. He is currently working as a Research assistant and Ph.D. Student at the ADaMS Lab and Advanced Composite Materials Engineering (ACME) Lab.
Balakrishnan’s current project focuses on the “Development of magnetically-loaded polymer composites with anisotropic properties using additive manufacturing” with a primary focus on material systems design, as well as process optimization and characterization. The goal of his research is to engineer the material systems and the additive manufacturing processes based on scientific principles to develop magnetic composites with properties suitable for electromechanical and electromagnetic applications.
